Overflow does not always mean the gutters need replacing. Leaves or moss can restrict an outlet, a joint may have moved or failed, or an incorrect fall may leave water standing. Damp walls and staining below a gutter are useful clues, but the roof edge and drainage route should be checked before deciding on the repair.

An assessment should consider the gutter profile, joint compatibility, brackets, fall and the route through the downpipe. Where a downpipe discharges into a blocked drain, replacing the gutter alone will not resolve the downstream obstruction. The repair scope should distinguish roofline work from underground drainage investigations.

Local joint or bracket repairs can suit an otherwise serviceable system. Replacement may be appropriate for extensive damage or incompatible components. Ask what is included for clearance, testing water flow and disposal, and whether the fascia behind the gutter needs attention. Observe from the ground rather than using an improvised ladder to investigate overflow.
